Lecture at NSCAD, Part 3:
Abstract
''Continuity and Innovation in Ceramics' is the third lecture in Alan Caiger-Smith's series at NSCAD. In this lecture, Caiger-Smith deconstructs the familial connection ceramicists tend to have with their craft's innovators by comparing contemporary advanced potting methods with those of the past. While examining the deterrents and catalysts for innovation, Caiger-Smith explores the history of specialized labour in ceramics, the different uses of materials and firings, and the effect of class division. He also comments on Bernard Palissy, the kilns of Jingdezhen, the role of patronage, the significance of imitation, Middle Eastern ewers, the introduction of inscriptions on ceramics, and the transmission of ideas between mediums.
