Abstract

As I became more attuned to the process of making, I realized that my Korean culture is very strongly embedded in my way of thinking. In traditional Korean culture, the basic notion of colour was rooted in an understanding of nature. A preference for white in traditional costumes reflected the Korean affection for simplicity and a sense of silence in nature. Koreans were very attached to the raw qualities of hemp and cotton because, in the raw state, these materials reminded them of nature. Lines were used by many Korean craftspeople to express their understanding of beauty. Traditional Korean dress, was designed to trace harmonious lines between the human body and the contour of the garment. These embedded cultural sensibilities underlie my affinity towards the colour white and simple lines as main elements in my work.
